10 years of the Medical Centre

Back in 2012, the Potter’s Village team were trying to decide how many children’s beds would be needed in the new Medical Centre, similarly, how many incubators and cots for premature babies. It turns out we needed none, we could buy incubators but not cots. At first we had to make do with polystyrene frozen food boxes, eventually progressing onto baby baths; I was delighted to see, earlier his year, that the Nursery now has proper baby cots, thanks to kind donations.

Back then the Medical Centre staff consisted of three Nurses and one Doctor, and we managed everything between us. We started slowly with Outpatients, then in the October we welcomed our first inpatient, Nathanial, a premature baby.

Fast forward to October 2022. Ten years, and many patients later, the Medical Centre now employs some 30 staff, has many beds, cots, incubators, and an impressive array of equipment across nine departments. Over the decade it has developed to provide high quality, high-dependency care for babies and children from across the Kisoro district and occasionally from further afield.

The Medical Centre is self-funding and charges a small fee for consultations, admissions and treatment. The Centre is open to everybody and help is given to those who are simply unable to pay. No child will go without consultation and required treatment. The Centre relies on donations and grants to support the work, especially when new equipment is needed. We thank all those who have supported this part of the project over the last 10 years, through volunteering, donating, praying or fundraising for this incredible work.
